What Are The Advantages And Characteristics Of Glass Fiber

Glass fiber (formerly known as glass fiber or fiberglass in English) is an inorganic non-metallic material with excellent performance. It has a wide variety of advantages, such as good insulation, strong heat resistance, good corrosion resistance and high mechanical strength, but its disadvantages are brittle and poor wear resistance. It is made from pyrophyllite, quartz sand, limestone, dolomite, bocalcite and brucite through high-temperature melting, drawing, winding and weaving. The diameter of its monofilament is several microns to more than 20 microns, equivalent to 1/20-1/5 of a hair. Each bundle of fiber precursor is composed of hundreds or even thousands of monofilaments. Glass fiber is usually used as reinforcing material in composites, electrical insulation material, thermal insulation material, circuit board and other fields of national economy.

Its main components are silicon dioxide, aluminum oxide, calcium oxide, boron oxide, magnesium oxide, sodium oxide, etc. according to the alkali content in the glass, it can be divided into non alkali glass fiber (sodium oxide 0% ~ 2%, belonging to aluminum borosilicate glass), medium alkali glass fiber (sodium oxide 8% ~ 12%, belonging to sodium calcium silicate glass containing or without boron) and high alkali glass fiber (sodium oxide more than 13%, belonging to sodium calcium silicate glass).

Raw materials and applications: glass fiber has higher temperature resistance, nonflammability, corrosion resistance, good heat and sound insulation, high tensile strength and good electrical insulation than that of agricultural production system. But it is brittle and has poor wear resistance. Used to make reinforced plastics (see the color picture) or reinforced rubber, as a reinforcing material, glass fiber has the following characteristics. These characteristics make the use of glass fiber far more extensive than other types of fibers, and its development speed is also outstanding. Its characteristics are listed as follows:

(1) High tensile strength and small elongation (3%).

(2) High elasticity coefficient and good rigidity.

(3) It has large elongation and high tensile strength within the elastic limit, so it can absorb large impact energy.

(4) It is inorganic fiber, non combustible and good chemical resistance.

(5) Low water absorption.

(6) Good dimensional stability and heat resistance.

(7) Good processability, can be made into strands, bundles, felts, fabrics and other different forms of products.

(8) Transparent to light.

(9) The development of surface treatment agent with good adhesion to resin has been completed.

(10) The price is cheap.

(11) It is not easy to burn and can be melted into glass beads at high temperature.
